Shortly before Easter, FREQCON had the opportunity to deliver a very special battery storage system! Our customer EnBW Energie Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg AG received a BESS custom<\/strong><\/a> container with sodium-ion batteries for its project of a stationary hybrid storage system, as well as a BESS Custom battery storage unit from our Second Life<\/strong><\/a> segment. What makes these two battery types so special: <\/p>\n

Sodium-ion batteries use sodium ions instead of lithium ions as charge carriers, while operating on the same principle of anode and cathode. Unlike lithium, sodium is abundantly available\u2014for example in seawater. This makes it more cost-effective and environmentally friendly, resulting in batteries that are both cheaper and more sustainable. They are also considered safer, as they are less prone to overheating, significantly reducing the risk of fire. Due to these properties, they are particularly well suited for stationary energy storage systems. <\/p>\n

For the Second Life battery storage system, EnBW Energie Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg AG had already purchased electric vehicle batteries from a well-known automotive manufacturer in advance. While many EV batteries lose some performance over the years, they often still retain around 70\u201380% of their original capacity. In many cases, they even come from test vehicles and would be recycled after only a very short period of use if not repurposed.
For stationary storage systems, however, this remaining energy capacity can still be used very effectively. In our project, these vehicle batteries are therefore given a \u201csecond life\u201d: they are reused to reliably store energy before eventually being recycled. This approach ensures that the remaining capacity is utilized to the fullest while also making a valuable contribution to sustainability. <\/p>\n
